Webcams down this weekend

Just a brief note to let you know that the Winterhighland webcams in the Ski Club hut on CairnGorm will be down for the next few days as their currently in Inverness. With the forecast looking milder for the weekend again, I’ve taken the opportunity to get the system of the mountain to make some changes and test them out at base.

This will hopefully help contribute to a more stable camera system that will help maximise uptime during winter as well as enabling a longer term archive of images. We hope you’ll like the mod when the system is fully reinstalled in the SSC hut. The system was also rigged temporarily and we need to secure it for winter so the gubbins and leads don’t get in the way!

Out of interest how are the webcam images being transmitted from the hut?
    wireless ? , dialup ?

what program are you using in linux

I’ve just changed my webcam server (a P2 machine) from running windows 2k, to linux unbuntu gutsy
and using “motion” command-line software to stream image from one camera (an old camcorder linked to TV-card in the pc bit overexposed at the moment), and take static shots from this and a usb camera,
linked it with a program called “sunwait” to close the program down at sunset

and scripts to shutdown machine after 30mins sunset, machine powers up automatically when a timer gives machine power in the morning

Thanks for the webcam service - very useful - planning some winter walks so knowledge of the weather is vital.

Have you considered HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging techniques to cope with the contast in your scenes? You take a series of photos with different exposures - munge them in a computer - to get detail in bits which would otherwise be too dark/light.

David, interesting idea. Not sure what options there are for doing this in Linux if any. Do you need to accurately control the exposure, as the cams being used can afaik only be adjusted relative to what their automatic setting would be rather than an absolute setting.

The days there’s been snow on the White Lady so far it seems the snow balances out the lighting issues (see photo in White Lady is White post).

Thanks for the suggestion though, will look into it.
