The Economist's custard pie
Date Posted: 23.36hrs on Fri 13 Apr 12

The Economist article that goes with it: [www.economist.com]

From The Guardian:
"Westminster SNP group leader Angus Robertson said the front cover is "patronising, metropolitan claptrap"."

From The Scotsman:
"But it was Mr Salmond who appeared most infuriated by the coverage.

“This is how they really regard Scotland. This is Unionism boiled down to its essence and stuck on a front page for every community in Scotland to see their sneering condescensions."

From The Economist:
“Edinburgh’s fine architecture and its Enlightenment role earned it the nickname ‘Athens of the North’. It would be a shame if that name became apt again for less positive reasons.”

From The Telegraph:
"Willie Rennie, the Scottish Liberal Democrat leader, said the map was a “bit silly” but the article posed several difficult questions that the SNP have so far failed to answer."

SNP press release [today]
""The reality of Scotland is that with independence we would be the sixth-wealthiest nation in the developed world in terms of GDP per head, compared to the UK's sixteenth place; we subsidised the rest of the UK by £510 for every man, women and child in Scotland in the last year; and the oil and gas asset base in the North Sea is worth £1.5 trillion, with more tax revenues to come than have already been generated."

Interesting counter-pie from Westminster SNP group leader Angus Robertson:

"It also now appears that this cover was only used in their UK edition and not their international edition - it seems they have shied away from attacking Scots overseas, and incurring the wrath of Scotland's influential ex-pat community. This whole episode has hugely damaged The Economist's credibility. When their attitude and coverage to Scotland is so ill-judged, it raises questions about their reporting of other nations."

Time now to hear from influential ex-pat Sean Connery ... [ducks]
