Converting the Sunnyside Pomas and Tom Dearg to fixed bullwheels with bullwheel unloading (like the Corrour Poma, or the M1 & Daylodge Pomas at CairnGorm) would go some way to improving getting around esp on a board.

Three problems with that:
1) Cost - I suspect the structure would require a heli-hopter to install. This plus the purchase cost would be significant when other lifts appear in need of urgent upgrade (Caenlochan, old Cluny and Meall Odhar poma for example). I heard from a full timer that Courrour was more expensive that Glas Maol!!!
2) He who wants rid of Meall Odhar Tbar couldn't get Courrour to work hence it was scrapped. It's unlikley he'll install any until he get's Courrour to worl. Because they removed the electrics, they can't try it in situ without a great deal of effort.
3) If boarders can't get off Sunnyside, I don't wanna let them near the intermediate slopes!!

Is there any reason for tower 1 being inside the line, it would be usual on Pomas given the line narrows into the drive bullwheel for the first towers to be outside the line?

You've lost me pal. The rope runs anti-clockwise.. Pylon one has only an uptrack set of wheels. The pomas get blown into it on the downline where the rop runs several feet above the top of the pylon. The bottom of the hanger has about 1-2 ft overlap on the pylon and skelps it when the wind blows south.

The pylon could arguably be shortened but I doubt it could be moved left to right??

What was/is wrong with the Corrour poma? Did it ever run?

i heard somewhere that it wasnt installed correctly and as a result didn't run very well.

Cost aside a fixed bullwheel would have many benefits particularly on a double lift like sunnyside where people cross over allot, less flying hazards and what not.

Never mind fixing/modifying Caenlochan... The entire setup needs replacing.

The first two towers are on the outside (rhs) of the uptrack, keeping the downline well clear of them where it narrows in towards the drive. I think Alan is querying whether this could be a 'fix' on Caenlochan if the current arrangement is proving problematic.

I get you now, brothers! Since the cushion was installed it's not really been a problem but it's worth considering on future installs.

Not sure about the installation part, but they certainly gave up making it work. Stupid place for a run anyway as it was a massive trek to get to it from the bottom of Tom Dearg. If it was extended it would be too steep as it drops sharply to the burn....

Sometimes called Home Run? Runs from the top of Coire Fionn and Meall Odhar Poma down to Tom Dearg. There is a sharp dog leg half way down. The old Chairlift company proposed having two pomas inside the upper part on the Coire Fionn side.

It's also comically marked 'easiest route down' when the said dogleg is actually really steep for a blue, and often scraped/icy.

Courrour was where i spent most of my learning days at Glenshee, it was a good alternative for beginners from tom dearg which often got absolutely mobbed like it does now.

Speaking of home run, there have been times this season that i recall skiing the top section, then turning left and following a groomed run to the bottom of clunys. But then you could go to the left again to get to meal odhar. I loved this run on quiet mid week days. Just a blast and some sections were tight and fast like a snow.cross track grinning smiley

The trick is to keep to the outside. Folk that can't ski, skid through there and push the snow to the outer fence. It is the easiest route in my opinion. Certainly the one I use when bringing folk home.

On a slightly different note; does anybody know:

A) When the new chairlift is likely to get put up?

cool smiley When the mtb track is likely to open, and if there are any changes from last year?

Also the website and Facebook page is dead, they need to shout about stuff like above a bit more. O think they should do video reports like Colin at cml. They were brilliant!

Chances suggest ill be practically living at Glenshee next season (possibly working too). Not a joke. So if they don't i will.

I was on the hill with Graham McCXabe last Friday, Oversteer, and asked him about the chairlift. He said they now had full authority at last from the Department of Transport, so they intend to erect it this summer.
