MacAvalanche at Glencoe
Date Posted: 17.14hrs on Sat 23 Apr 11
MacAvalanche comes to Glencoe on the 30th April.

The event will see 120 of the countries top mountain bike riders being dropped by helicopter on the summit of Meall a' Bhuiridh in the early afternoon. At exactly 3pm (if everything goes to plan) there will be a "le mans style" mass start and the riders will race on the snow down the main basin, past the rescue shed, down Mugs Alley, along the Access Return and then down the bike track to the carpark.

First to the bottom will claim the glory.

There promises to be thrills and spills galore, so if you have nothing better to do next Saturday why not come along and support the event.

The access chair will be open for spectators from 9am so please arrive early if you want to access one of the top viewing spots and remember if you plan to view the event from near the summit bring sturdy footwear and lots of warm clothes.

There promises to be a real party atmosphere on the day with Red Bull providing the entertainment.

Yes. It will be open for skier access in the morning so if anyone fancies a last slide of the 2011 season at Glencoe then Saturday is the day. Main section of the spring run still looks pretty good from the cameras.

The excitement is building, the sun is set to shine and preparations are almost complete for the event of the year.

No not the Royal Wedding.......

.........the MacAvalanche.

No Fuss are on the hill today marking out the route and it promises to be truly spectacular.

However they have a big decision to make.

To ride the "Haggis trap or not"

The Haggis trap looked pretty gnarly to me when I walked down the route yesterday but there were plenty of bike tracks heading through it. (I believe there has been some secret practice going on this week).

Find out tomorrow if the route takes the adventure line through the haggis trap or skirts round via Happy Valley. (Either way it's going to be spectacular).

The top of the course is looking to be in good shape with patches of snow linking pretty much all the way from the top of the main basin.

....and from the rescue shed down the trails are firm and dry and should provide a great riding surface all the way to the carpark.

We're taking bets on how long it's going to take the winner to get from the summit to the carpark. A free day pass for the winner. Go to our Facebook page to take part. [www.facebook.com]

The access chairlift will be running for spectators from 9am however from there you will need to walk up the hill to the best viewing spots.
(Unfortunately for HSE reasons the Cliffhanger chair is only available for competitors).

From the top of the access chair to the summit will probably take about 1hr if you're reasonably fit. The best viewing is probably on the knoll just above the Haggis trap (probably a 45min walk from the top of the access chair).

For those a little less fit you can catch the excitement from the picnic area at the top of the access chair or from the carpark.

Joe Barnes took just under 11 minutes to get from the summit to the carpark -absolutely awesome.

For the latest pictures and video of the event check out the Glencoe Facebook page [www.facebook.com]

One of the maddest races in the UK hits the snowy slopes of Glencoe Mountain resort this weekend - The MacAvalanche brought to you by No Fuss Events is a mass start downhill bike race from the summit of the ski centre all the way to the carpark. The race starts on snow and finishes on the rock and heather of the lower mountain.

Last years was an amazing specator event and with more riders, more race time and much more snow we expect this years event to be even better.

Racing takes place on both the Saturday and the Sunday.

For a preview of what to expect this year check out last years video - [vimeo.com]

The event is absolutely free to watch so please spread the word and lets see if we can get a big audience to support the riders as they risk life and limb hurling themself down the mountain.

The added bonus is that the cliffy will be running all weekend so even if we don't manage to open the main basin T-bar for the weekend there will be easy access to the upper mountain for tourers.
