Attention all walkers! 2011 snow patch season
Date Posted: 12.49hrs on Thu 5 May 11
Winter hibernation is well and truly over, and it's time to resurrect everyone's favourite summer thread! Tens of thousands of views of this thread last year, and hopefully there'll be more contributors in 2011 than ever before.

On the downside, it looks like 2011 is shaping up to be a very poor year indeed for survivals. The incredible April weather has left the hills looking more like early June than early May. Certainly this is true for the west. This photograph (courtesy of Scottish Hills forum) of Ben Lui near Tyndrum shows how little snow is around.

I said to coaster in an email recently that I expect all the snow in the west to go this year. In all honesty, it's overdue. The run of survivals on Aonach Beag and Ben Nevis from 2007-2010 (4 summers) is unusual by standards of the last 25 years or so. The only thing we can hope for is a repeat of summer 2007, and that the frequent freeze/thaw cycles have stiffened up the snow that does exist. That said, whilst the warm weather has undeniably stripped a lot of snow, the lack of SW hairdriers is a bonus. These are equally adept at removing snow from the hill.

As usual, it'll be an interesting summer and autumn. Fingers crossed, and it goes without saying that if anyone's got any photographs, or comes across any, then please post a link to them here.

Well had a fantastic run down the Ciste Gully with Helen this afternoon, to bag month 19! Firm crunchy fast spring snow. Will get some photos up later or tomorrow, about to head out and only just back in this evening!

It is quite incredible. I was climbing at Polldubh on Sunday and you could visibly see what was left of the snow on the mamores recede during the day.

Oh ye prophets of doom!! More westerly winds and thaw/freeze cycles than last year, so my early prediction is both sphinx and pinnacles in Garbh Choire Mor surviving, and the Ben and A.Beag by skin of their proverbial!
Saying that, winter came to an abrupt end, with the thaw beginning on 20.March! No significant snowfall here in the Cairngorms since weekend of 10th-12thMarch - incredible! And no doubt, snow cover more like early June, however, little change in the last couple of weeks, poss. due to it being cooler, and some frost at night; also, maybe back to January snow and earlier now, so more resistant?
Cheers the noo!

I wish I shared your optimism, Da kishman! In the west generally, the situation is terrible. Have a look at this photograph of Bidean nam Bian from 1st May. Looks more like mid June than early May.

Aye Firefly, but Bidean isnae the Ben or A.Beag! As you've said yourself on these threads, it's amazing how certain patches can hunker down and survive! I'll still be pretty surprised if there are no survivals at all in the west.......having said that I'm online looking for edible hats.........................!

Some more good pictures from Glen Ey and around Glas Maol. [www.flickr.com]

A good picture of the Brudhach Mor, which I've visited every July 1 since 2008.

Although it looks lean at the moment, I remember last year there was tons of snow around late May which then seemed to vanish very rapidly as it warmed up in June. I think the low temps and lack of freeze-thaw cycles during the winter 2009/10 was identified as a major factor in the rapid melt? Will be interesting to see what happens this year.

The photo cannot be of the Brudhach Mor, as the slope is not unifrom enough and the view of Beinn Iutharn Mhor on the right would be impossible from the Brudhach Mor. The photo is of Garbh Choire, taken from the Cairn of Claise side of the corrie and looking towards the spur up from Sron na Gaoithe. A big depth of snow in Garbh Choire.

Fresh snow on the top of the Cairngorms this morning. Just over 3000 feet by the looks of it.

Heard it here first, the ice age is back and the highlands are once again glaciated. Speculators sought to invest in a new glacial ski resort, to have the largest piste mileage in Europe.
