I would put this up there in the Top 10 uber-thaws of the last decade

There is still more snow on lower lying hills around the Ben Wyvis area than there was on CairnGorm on Thursday. There wasn't that much snow on CairnGorm, certainly not a widespread deep consolidated base, it just happened that what snow there was landed in most of the right places to bash out and give decent skiing.

Snow still expected tonight.

I would agree this has been a particularly warm and ferocious thaw. We'll see in the morning but it has probably wiped out the Coe and Nevis, which had deep and wide cover, a consolidated base and probably 100 inches of recent snow.

Then we get heavy snow forecast for Tuesday/Wednesday, but yet another ridiculously mild spell firing through on Friday to destroy any gains. By god Scotland can be frustrating at times

Friday & the w/e just might turn out not as bad as we think - Watch this space !

I hope not! However it looks like most of the holiday period is going to be a burst flush, which is not good revenue wise for the resorts.

We're not the only ones with problems however. I'm off to the east coast of the USA on Thursday and it's been extremely mild there recently.

The mountain I was eyeing in West Virginia is only offering 2 runs despite an extensive snowmaking system. It's been too warm to make any meaningful snow.

Weather permitting, we will open the Cas tomorrow for expert skiers & snowboarders only, the train will be making mid station stops.

Good luck!

Anyone know how much snow they have had up there?

We went up for a look today. Fresh snow, and its still falling... even down in Aviemore. Not much cover on lower down slopes sadly, but the Cas looked white enough.
This photo was 3.30pm, taken looking up from the DL Poma

Kiwi Fraser - looks more like the foot of the Fiacaill Poma to me. The Daylodge Poma is the one 'on its own' behind the funicular building

Had a nice couple of hours this morning, little wind, broken cloud and light snow showers.

The cas was loading from just above the zigzag as the gun barrel was thin and broken for the last couple of meters. This allowed more competent skiers to use the bottom cas tow path to get back to the train mid station.

There was a bit of a walk to the traverse but very ski-able from the elbow down and on to the 105. Mrs Windy didn't like the walk too much as it was a bit steep and icy.

The snow was dry compressed powder on top of a firm base, nice to turn on for all levels.

Interesting mix of people in the Q, many were at CG for the first time and didn't know there was a train and how big the place was! A lot of people from the North of England but also a few accents from further afield.

We deiced to call it a day at lunch time as it was getting very busy on the run with all levels of skiers competing for space.

Surprisingly nice few hours on the mountain today after have such low expectations. The choo-choo was not playing ball for the first hour and it was not until 11:15 for the first public run up.

Significant improvement in cover but the quality of the snow was very variable, rough hard to soft fresh. The traverse is thin at the top but very skiable. Visibility was variable, two pylons at worst but on occasion you could see to the car park. There was very welcome active Q management keeping folks in order and moving. Wind was blowing up the tow path, fresh then increased to oh my G*d what are we doing out here by mid afternoon but on the upside no Qs then.
Just shows some times you just have to go and see and forget the forecast.

The rope came of the Cas about 14:15 with a thrown away T-bar so I called it a day then as I didn't fancy hanging around in the wind.

You can ski top to bottom if you have your rock hoppers on. I chose the home run but other were picking their way down Burnside.

If the mild predictions are correct I don't hold much hope for top to bottom continuing or the top of the traverse but the Cas/ Ciste should be fine.

Some photos from Wednesday in Pix from the Slopes, Funicular is scheduled for 9am first trains on Friday and the weekend weather permitting. Maybe back to 10.20am after the weekend, check on Sunday.

^Winchcat bashing out drifts on the Traverse.

Quite a bit of snowfall and siginficant drifting overnight into Thursday has improved cover on the Top Basin. Upper case also caught some fresh, has the best cover.

the fencing on the traverse has certainly taken a bashing at some point...has been burried the last few visits so not seen it for a wee while

Be nice to skiers...they have enough problems already

I was up sunday and what snow there was was actually quite nice. Especially on the cas. The gun barrel was fun, very much like a half pipe. As always though queues were pretty bad, well managed, but at its peak it was pretty bad. High spirits all round though, even through the rain.

The "mini-shred" area on the cas, as I was told by a ski instructor, a bit of a disapointment. The jumps were mere bumps.
