Well a slow start to the day. A 2hr drive followed by a 30-40 min delay on the funicular at ~11am. Noone told us what was going on which was quite frustrating. Not a great start must be said.
However...
After a quick warm up in the Ciste/Ptarmigan bowls, which were good but a bit slow & boring, I headed down the M1 Piste. The run from the Ptarmigan building to the Traverse has excellent well groomed cover, as does the traverse itself. The M1 is similar for the top section but most of the way down is one piste basher width. It was a great run for fast shorties and after 2 runs I was knackered.
Following a short interlude I went back and did it again, brilliant!
Then, for a change I headed down towards the Cas though skied most of the way down on 105 which is plenty fun if a bit thin in places. Then dropped into the Gun Barrel which is very narrow, great for shorties but a killer on the legs after a few runs. From mid-way down the Gun Barrel to the M1 Poma there is no set route and it does involve a bit of grass hopping, from the top of the Gun Barrel there is no easy route for beginners. The entrance to the M1 poma was thinning as the day progressed and was becoming tedious, I reckon they will get that sorted as plenty of big drifts about.
The Cas (run) was the pick of the day, virtually deserted and full of lovely soft snow and was nice all the way down though it narrows in places and the uptrack is pretty good too. The top bowls had good cover but were in a blizzard cloud most of the day whereas the Cas was more or less under sunshine. Blis you might say
Would go up tomorrow again if I could, I think probably that was the best day I've had at Cairngorm certainly this season, but possibly even over the last few years simply because of the lift served off-piste and virtually noone to share it with compared to the 20 minute queus I'm used to at CML... Awsome.
I think they will set the snow canon up tonight possibly, saw some guys working on it today, it would certainly come in handy where it is positioned now. Also saw a peice of scrappy snow fencing get plucked from the ground by a poma on the M1 and transported 50-100m down the hill. Ski patrol delt with that shortly after.
Took some pictures and videos, will upload them when I can.
If you couldnt be bothered reading that I basically had an awsome day!
