Britain in a day
Date Posted: 16.34hrs on Wed 26 Oct 11
The BBC is doing a really interesting project on 12th November.
The idea is to put together a self filmed portrait of Britain " in a day".
I'll declare an interest here, and say that I am involved in the project, but please don't let that put you off.
Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald will put the clips together for a film to be shown sometime around the 2012 Olympics.
more details at www.bbc.co.uk/britaininaday

It would be great if we could get some Scottish snow into it! Assuming we have some, obviously.

I wonder if it's worth making an official approach to Cairngorm? It might be worth their while pulling out the stops to try and get something open considering the positive (free) publicity a short segment could get.

I suggest Cairngorm on the grounds that they are the most likely area to have accessible skiable snow on the 12th. If the others can get something running, then definitely, go for it.

Cairngorm wanted to submit something for this and came up with the idea of filming my attempt to get some November turns. Unfortunately the weather didn't play ball and by the week of the 12th it looked like it wasn't going to be possible.

However I headed up on the Thursday to scout around and see if I could find any patches remaining from the October fall and came across one in Coire Domhain that would have definitely allowed three turns... then!

Ranger /patroller / and Cairngorm's own Spielberg, Ruari Macdonald, was game to try so we headed up on the Saturday with winds gusting eighty according to the summit station. In the shelter of Sneachda Ruari 'interviewed' me with mike well hidden inside my jacket to try and avoid the wind noise, then we headed up the Goat Track where upon it started to sleet. Fortunately the wind had dropped a bit when we reached the patch but it had considerably shrunk in size since the Thursday !

The unedited footage has gone to the BBC but Ruari has ploughed through it ( in his words ..the 2hours of walking and 10 seconds of skiing winking smiley.. )and produced this edit which I was amazed at, as the unedited looked dull and gloomy.

Whether the BBC use it or not, it was a great day, and I was chuffed at getting up and down the Goat Track in ski boots carrying skis, but will be very grateful if someone can teach me how to do jump turns this season .... And here was me thinking that the September patch was going to be the smallest this year winking smiley

Too true Daveski !

And your right, once a seed is sown it does grow. When Cairngorm approached me about it I had images of a white mountian and powder turns like I've had in many recent Novembers, but as it became increasingly unlikely I suppose I became more determined. Ruari had suggested hiking to Feith Buidhe as he'd seen patches there when he was on the summit of Cairngorm earlier in the week, so I was extremely pleased when I found the nearer one in Coire Domhain thumbs up

Hilly, if you rope yourself to a rock above the patch you could do an infinite number of jump turns, in a state of blissful suspended animation - enjoy!

On tonight, BBC2 9.00pm.... only about 10 seconds of the challenge to find snow, but Ruari and I saw the film last month and it's a great watch.

The SCGB did a report last week [www.skiclub.co.uk]
