Yup a little bit whiter again this morning, Goose starting to fill up.

This is what Nevis say about early opening on their snow site, We plan to open for skiing and snowboarding on Saturday 17 December 2011, providing there is sufficient snow. However IF there is sufficient snow for skiing and snowboarding before this date then we may be able to open the weekend before. So opening next weekend would be a possibility conditions depending.

That's great news Chris the long range forecast is looking pretty good but a week is a long time for the Scottish weather anything could happen but fingers crossed.

CraigCam you said by 9pm the temperatures would begin to drop back in the West you were spot on with your timing.

Freezing levels briefly climbed above the summits but have fallen back again as temperatures should fall to the 300m mark by the morning maybe even see some snow to sea level over the weekend.

The winds have picked up again at all levels with summit speeds of 80mph plus blowing more westerly.

Sunday we may head off for a hike into the Backs depending on the amount of snow from now until Sunday just want to ride some of the white stuff.

Great pics good to see the backs Chris... Sweet.

Didn't manage to get any photos this morning of the Backs but did get a few of the garden before work.

More pics here... [backcorries.wordpress.com]

With a wee bit more snow and a strong westerly the backs will be well loaded maybe if Nevis Range opens at the weekend a drop in the backs maybe possible.

My concern about Nevis Range opening isn't the weather but the fact that the Goose as derailed from tower 3-4 and possibly 5 completely of the hangers, unless this is work which still needs doing from replacing the bull wheel bearings also there does not look like there is any boxes on yet.

Hopefully the Nevis Range Engineers can work their magic and have the hill ready for some very excited punters.

Sweet shots on the blog Mark...

I reckon the backs have been catching lots of snow. During the clear spells today you could see the SW faces were a bit scoured so the NE faces should be getting loaded. That's backed up looking at the high res version of the pic I posted a link to (thanks Great Glen Game). You could see cornices developing above Winger Wall and that has to be a good sign that the snow is going in the right direction.

Looking at the forecast seems like more snow tonight, dry tomorrow, more snow tomorrow evening, then a very brief warm up Thursday, but with more wet snow either side. [www.metoffice.gov.uk]

Infact a very brief warm up followed by more snow is just what is needed to consolidate the snow and give a base. IF Nevis were open Saturday there could be a fairly mature snowpack in the backs with some lines pretty well filled in, might even be worth the hike....

backcorries, gorgeous photos - thanks!

Loved your #1111 photo so much I've linked to it on my Facebook page ... and Konrad Bartelski has clicked 'Like'.

These are the best early December conditions for the west that I can recall seeing (from 500 miles south). How do they rate in the historic scheme of things?

Thanks David for your kind words I am stoked that Konrad Bartelski as liked my photos.

I only have a wee point & shoot pocket camera which I can pop in my jacket when I am out n about, but its great to catch them moments you want to remember.

Its certainly been a good start to the season and only time will tell if its a great start to the season. If Nevis Range opens at the weekend and the Backs are doable that will be the earliest I have rode the Backs in ten years of riding Nevis Range.

What's the earliest anyone else has rode the Backs?

Great having a reporter in the field! Shame about their storm damage but hopefully from next weekend they have a great season, I can't wait to get up.

Exceptional depth given the time of year. Be very interested to see close-ups of the cliffs of Coire an Lochain and Easy Gully.
