Tommorrow (Monday) looks a good day for a hoof / skin up.

Since up tracks always seem to be the weak link in the snow chain, why do ski centres not put some matting down at known problem areas? Wouldn't be too great an investment and it would pay for itself very quickly,

Been asking that question myself for ages. I think it would need to be a temporary fixture for several reasons; piste machines cant drive over it (without a good depth of snow) without completey destroying the surface (or so I beleive). Also Estate owners and "Enviromentalists" would get a bee in their bonnet about it as it increases the footprint of the lifts somewhat and will effect Bambi's natural habitat, etc ,etc.

Id be interested to hear why Glenshee got rid of the matting they had on the plastic many years ago.

Sadly not a snowy webcam shot, but a spectacular inversion at dawn:

That's extraordinary. To those of us who don't do meteorology, can you explain that, alan?

Look up temperature inversion - [en.wikipedia.org]

Surprised you havent seen one in the alps? I remember one following us up a chairlift in Tignes.

I've just walked to the summit and we have had around 8 inches of new snow overnight at the top of the access chair and around 14inches from the rescue shed up. Unfortunately the snow fell straight down without any drifting so it has failed so far to fill in the burns and hollows on the mountain. All the streams are still running cutting across the runs and the ground is to soft and the snow not consolidated enough to use the piste machine. If it freezes overnight and we get a bit more snow and some wind then who knows!!! Andy

Looks like there has been another 2-4inches further up the hill since then on the radar accumulations. Certainly the obliterated window on the Summit Cam is a hopeful sign! smiling smiley

Glencoe summit camera is looking good. Looks like more snow has fallen, and it looks very winds so hopefully snow being blown into the right areas!

Beautiful shot, alan! Really nicely framed with the authentic 'drifted lens' effect.
