Re: Glenshee Snow ....2012

First trip to Glenshee but ended up walking rather than skiing this week. Here's some pictures from yesterday's wander to Glas Maol. There were a few guys patching and shoveling the sunnyside poma track. Corie Fionn seemed to have the best cover on the east of the area but race track looked best over all. Still not managed to ski at Glenshee so cant really say how easy its going to be to link all the areas together without more snow. Corie Fionn looked like it would go but you'd have to walk in and out?

GPS was running so went with daughter....walk to cairnwell cafe (shame Badnoch still not running) race track was in great condition and no problems getting to it, had to walk at bottom back to t-bar as very stoney outside the cairnwell cafe, butcharts access was more firm and thin in middle, butcharts corrie was well filled and run full width, work on the park ongoing, last part to return to poma was a bit sketchy and not for beginners, a short walk (30ft) an option.
24hours too much thaw has done for the links, still had fun and was like a GPS private session...still had fun and good crack with those on the hill...great weather sunny all day windchill became an issue from about 2pm.
Be nice to skiers...they have enough problems already

Looks like there's been a dusting at Glenshee overnight? But they really need to get that new chairlift going. It must be quite frustrating for them - whatever the delay is, it all looked set to run this season, but I'm starting to think that maybe it wont. Still carring barrels I see (see webcan image attached).

Snow canons made a big difference to the front of the Cairnwell cafe making it easy as pie getting from the bottom of the red run/butcharts to the T-bar. Unfortuneatly the plastic tow track, despite getting man made snow, wasnt open so if you wanted to ski you had to hike. The Baddoch chair would have been ideal in todays conditions though the DoT still havnt appeared yet though Ski Patrol Andy reckons it should be spinning by next wednesday.
See Snow making thread for snow making details.
Only butcharts access and Cairnwell T-bar were spinning but the far race track still has superb cover and today had nicely groomed soft snow on it. It was near perfect though there are thin areas and exposed rocks at the top & bottom to look out for. So needless to say I just lapped that all afternoon though occasionally going up butcharts where the piste is thin in places, and wide in others.
Particularly on the uptracks there are some icy patches so probably best going single up the T-bar for that reason.
All in all. A good afternoon.
Pics coming soon.

I expect it's too windy for it. But hope it spins very soon.

Snow, what there was of it, was largely excellent and improving with soft powder. Nice, soft and slippy. However the wind caused a massive blizzard that lasted pretty much all afternoon and visibility came & went with it. When it died down a bit a went over to Butcharts Coire to see what was what only to be welcomed by a rather beautiful stash of pow. Not I couldnt see allot and I had the wrong skis so couldnt really enjoy it. Theres not much of a base so where its thin you will likely hit a rock. But was really nice and the stash is quite large.
Howver take great care if you go up in conditions like today. I got disorientated countless times and had trouble guaging my speed at points. Also the snow felt good for an avalanche in places but as I say, my judgements were messed up with the wind.
Oh and if you are a skillful skier it is possible to ski back to base via the claybokie gully though you need to stick to the left of the burn or you will have to jump it half way down (like I did).

Good snow today. It was snowing all day and the wind came and went. Nice drifts allong snow fences. All runs seem to be gradually filling in.
They got some decent rails setup in the park today in Butcharts coire.
Spoke to ski patrol today and apparently the DoT man never showed up. They are understandably pretty frustrated about it. So though the chair is mechanically good to go, its only open to staff at present.
I had a good day. Prevailing weather didnt upset play too much, certainly not as much as yesterday.

Nice pics Cammyyammy. Im hoping to take a day off work this week, and hit the 'Shee for the 1st time this season. Anyone know the longterm forecast? looks enough snow for an enjoyable day up the 'Shee, over the next few days.
P.S Im a long term lurker, finally signed up to this site! Been using Winter Highland for the last few years! Love the public reports folks. Keep up the good work!

Monday is probably the best option if you can go for it at short notice.
