Christmas Sliding
Date Posted: 13.47hrs on Tue 13 Dec 11

I was wondering if anyone knew when the resorts were closed around the Christmas holidays.

I now it's all snow and weather dependant, but hoping to go up to Glencoe or Nevisrange on christmas eve.

Give me a shout if you guys know, thanks a lot.

p.s got up to the mighty one on sunday for a bit of ice/sugar/slush riding, and lots of walking. A great day, and really appreciate the guys getting it open.

In the past christmas day has been the only day when resorts have closed. This may be different from resort to resort but I know that somewhere was open on the 1st last year for anyone without a hangover.

Yeah I only ever hear of them closing on christmas day itself. Usually they are open all other days.

I had a similar experience as you andy up at Glenshee on New Years day either last year or the year before. Only the die hards were there getting their well earned blue skys n pow whilst the rest of the country was drinking black coffee and feeling sorry for themselves. As it turns out skiing is a great cure for a hangover. (I wasnt driving btw) winking smiley

As said, I think its just christmas they close on. As Iv been skiing on New Years eve and New Years day. Though you may want to check opening times as it wouldnt surprise me if they close early on NY eve and open late on NY day. But I dont think they close entirely other than christmas. And rightly so; Noone should have to work on Christmas for other peoples enjoyment.

So should all the hotels close up shop and turf their guests out too? Working holidays goes with the territory of working in the tourist/leisure industry.

Certainly on CairnGorm in the past no-one was forced to work Christmas Day, an effort was made to ensure all staff had either Christmas Day or New Years Day off - covering New Year's Day was the more difficult, there was always more volunteers for Christmas Day!!

CairnGorm stopped opening Christmas Day in 2002, partly because there was no skiing amidst concern about the Ptarmigan been swamped, while under closed system restrictions while people wanted to go and play in what snow there was. It's stuck since then, despite displeasure from esp accommodation providers and holiday organizers.

If any one visitor attraction business in Strathspey and any one of the five Scottish Ski Areas should be open on Christmas Day, then it is CairnGorm Mountain. Yes I have done my fair share of working Christmas Days and there was always a fantastic vibe on the hill.

That CairnGorm Mountain as the focal point attraction that overlooks the Strath is closed reflects badly on an area trying to be taken seriously as a world class visitor destination.

There is a huge captive audience in Strathspey during the holidays, there is very little else to go out and do on Christmas Day, thus even in the days of the Chairlift, there were very large numbers of sightseers. Esp so if there wasn't snow down in Aviemore, the lure of going up the mountain to experience a 'White Christmas' was huge.

People who spend Christmas at home might be thinking why would you want to go out? Well people staying in holiday accommodation, tend to open their presents in the morning, then have several hours of dead time in the middle of the day before Christmas Dinner is served in their accommodation.

Im a strong beleiver of that. If you ask me its being a bit self centred making others work for my own enjoyment on the biggest public holiday of the year. Of course its not going to happen, but everyone should be able to enjoy christmas. Its a traditional time to spend with loves ones where joy is shared and wealth doesnt mean anything. Its a time where EVERYONE is equal and equally celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Of course these days Christmas is massivly overly commercialised and the world is controlled by business and none of these morals, not even the meaning of christmas means anything as soon as theres a profit to be made.

It all may sound massively old fashioned but its all very true.

"Selfishness makes Christmas a burden, love makes it a delight."

Did you actually read my post above? In the past CML had more people wanting to work Christmas Day than were needed, extra pay helped, but also for people wanting New Year off instead.

Before you get too hung up about the commercialisation of Christmas, until mass media commercialised Christmas, Christmas was barely an event in Highland Scotland. Hogmanay on the other hand....

Santa Claus should take over the funi and give it reindeer power (a few more than the local ones might be needed)

Yes I did. Although I was only really addressing "So should all the hotels close up shop and turf their guests out too? Working holidays goes with the territory of working in the tourist/leisure industry."

That may be the case but some people who work in the leisure industry, from experience, literally dont get a choice.
