refusing to double up at Glencoe
Date Posted: 18.31hrs on Sun 18 Dec 11
I was at Glencoe yersterday and ended up having words with the old guy who was the lifty at the t-bar going to the summit

His attitude stank and i told him so

Barking orders at people to double up is a sure fire way of rubbing people up the wrong way. I got to the front on my new board and before i could say anything, an old guy skiing jumped to the front and stood next to me waiting for the t-bar

I said "sorry mate, i'm going to take this on my own" and he said "you'll be fine with me" WTF ?????

I told him i'm fine on t-bars, that's not the problem... i just didn't want my new board damaged by skis going over the top of it. The old guy lifty joins in telling me i'll be fine!!!!. I told him "I paid for this f-ing lift ticket, not him, if i want to take the lift on my own, that's my choise, he's just there to make sure it operates safely"

anyways, cue much crying by the lifty and the skier...we missed 2 t-bars during this time so i give in and go on the t-bar with the skier. 10 foot up the lift his skis crosss the front of my board and mark it.

i lost my rag with him and he seemed to think it was ok because he said sorry??? I removed the t-bar from behind his legs and cast him adrift.

thats the last time i double up on a lift.... my board is more important than the 5 seconds saved by doubling up.

I was up at Glencoe today and at times the queues were fairly long. I'm glad everyone was doubling up because it meant we all got more time on the mountain in excellent conditions.

If you want your board to stay pristine stick it in a display case,

otherwise, suck it up.

Nice one grumpy! Removing the t bar:-)
Id be pi$$ed off too if that happened to my board.

As im fairly new to t barring, nervous etc i go alone. It never occured to me this could happen from skis. Does that happen with another snowboarder too?

In reply to post 2-its not about the board never getting scratched, its a principle thing here. Perhaps id scratch the guy's car or whatever, if he's on hire skis, then just say sorry.

Aint it fun!

Nope, i'll be riding the pomas and t-bars on my own, but thanks for the advise on sucking it up.

I'm not sure what your point is. Your board is ultimately a consumable item with a limited lifespan - brand new or not a bit of top sheet damage is part and parcel of ownership and something that you're just as likely to inflict on another mountain user as they are to you.

As to forcibly removing the skier from your t-bar? I'm surprised your lift ticket wasn't cut off at that point.

ah the old i paid so it's my lift argument, well the people giving you the ticket say you are to double up and it's their lift so how come you get to do as you please and make the queue twice as long, Glencoe is great because the lifties actually make selfish soloers double up rather than standing there ignoring it.

go on pomas and t-bars on your own matey if you want, it's your decision and nobody has the right to tell you not to. they can ASK you if you'll dpouble up, but if you dont want to for your own reasons, they have to accept your answer.

bizare that others think they can tell me it's ok that they damage my property... that they almost have a right to do it???

why do they have to accept your answer, you only get a ticket if they say so and they can take it back, not sure why you think your special.

it's an unrealistic expectation that you won't get someone on the back of your brand new board/skis in a lift queue or on a shared lift, especially here in scotland.

Yes grumpy i agree, no one has the right to tell someone else what to do, esp when it's based on opinions/view points.
I worry more that ill injure someone by losing my balance.
Another thing how do you double up with a shorter person??

Aint it fun!

Grumpy - Folk like you are not welcome in Scotland. If doubling up is too hard, I'd hate to see you coming down. You're probably the type that breathes a sigh of relief if you get top to bottom without falling down. Real skiers want as many laps as possible, folk like you should feck off elsewhere
