Helen,

I went in there 2 weeks ago with the skis via the Fairy Glen on the bike. It is hard work on the way up, but really fast on the way down! Coire nan Clach is really nice to ski in, and there are many options for different lines to do. None of them are any "worse" than skiing the back corries of Aonach Mor, for example.

Alternatively, you could head to the top of the corrie via Glen Quoich (bike still useful, but less ascent). Possibly shorter on the way in, but the down side is that you have to climb back out, or walk a long way round the bottom of the hill to get back to your bike.

A few pictures here:

Thanks Scomuir. Great photos, but I think it's a bit far and steep for me as I'm not a climber or much of a biker.

As an aside to this thread, I must say how much I have enjoyed dipping into your website over the years, but having not visited since your Sputan Dearg trip, the Coire nan Clach report was new to me as were your Norway ones- now that appeals smiling smiley. Looks a fantastic holiday.

I've also enjoyed looking at [www.steepscotland.info] I particularly like the way you have photographs of the areas you are describing with the gullies highlighted and named. One of the problems I've always had as a non climber is trying to work out where named gullies that skiers have descended actually are as most of them are not named on the 1:25000 OS map. Thanks.. keep up the good work thumbs up

Right Iain... back to lasting snow patches winking smiley !

I walked up to a good, consolidated patch in the corrie at the back of Hart Fell near Moffat today. Estimated depth (from surrounding terrain) 2-3 metres, length 15m, breadth 10m. At around 770 m asl, it's NE facing and in the shade so with the cool-down expected, could it last until May ?

Thanks Helen. Norway was great - plenty of easy touring, with the added bonus that they have snow! Cheers for the comments about the steepscotland site - hope it's useful.

Went for a walk today around the tops above Loch Muick. I thought it was just going to be a quick trip up Lochnagar and back down, but it ended up being the full circuit. Anyway, in keeping with the thread topic, a couple of pictures are attached showing the snow in the main corrie of Lochnagar, and Braeriach / Sputan Dearg.

Well done, Ross! I did wonder that owing to the SW nature of the winter storms whether there'd be any snow still clinging on in the Borders. Merrick's snow looked all to have gone by the third week in March, other reports I've heard suggested there was nothing left. To have this reasonable looking lump is excellent, and given the right conditions (as has been forecast) then I wonder if you're right about your prediction about May. You may have to dig your boots out again in a few weeks' time! smiling smiley

The snow that we've just had overnight looks to have deposited a fair amount on the Cairngorms, particularly on southerly aspects. Be interesting to see what the drifts are like when this system clears.

As for March 2012: proof, if it were needed... [www.bbc.co.uk]

Considerable fall of fresh snow over Glencoe and Lochaber last night.

So what is the verdict/predictions for the Cairngorms this year, is it going to be touch and go for survivals due to the poor snowfall we have had? Hopefully more snow this month and possibly May will help the situation along with a cool dry summer.

Been away for a few days, but it's great to see so much cool weather and fresh snow still lying. Though it doesn't make up for the dearth of snow in February and March, it has given a much-needed top-up to the snow already there.

An excellent picture of Ben Nevis from yesterday, courtesy of Gary Hodgson. [3.bp.blogspot.com]

Observatory Gully still looking very decent, and it appears to be similar to early April 2011 in terms of depth, as Blair Fyffe commented to me in an email.

Garbh Choire Mor, 16th April: [www.flickr.com]

The forecast for the coming week is, remarkably, more sub-zero temperatures and precipitation. April has been quite a month, and is on track to give a net gain of snow for most long-lying snow patch sites in Highland Scotland. I feared the worst at the start of the month, but the medium term forecast into May is more cool weather. Scotland's weather remains predictably unpredictable...

Fantastic late season accumulations favouring the Gorms more than Nev Range. Summit temps fluctuating so a little consolidation even this late in the season.
Deposits accumulating to the south or s/s west which is not ideal but in late April any snow, particularly substantial snow,is always a bonus. During the 20 or so years of the Ben Nevis Observatory recording summit data there was one year that the maximum recorded depth of snow was in May. Remarkable but given the current blocking high in the mid Atlantic and the southerly track of the lows i am seeing how this could well have been a similar late season blast of winter back then over 100 years ago!!

It's great to see all this late season skiing, and an impressive depth is to be had on the northern Cairngorms by the looks of it. As coaster has stated, all snow's a bonus, particularly substantial snow. However, as this snow has come exclusively from the NE it will have done little to benefit the places that need it most in terms of long-lying patch sites. Also, Lochaber has faired far poorer than the Cairngorms, so the net benefit, though noticeable, is not spectacular.

As a man who likes comparisons smiling smiley, I had a look at the level of cover that was present in early April 2011 on Aonach Mor, as the recent picture (27th April, from the SAIS website), reminded me of the start of that month last year. I've tagged a picture below it from 5th April 2011. Though superficially this year looks better, because of the recent falls, the depth looks similar. However, the snow in April took a real beating last year in the ridiculously warm spell. This year, by contrast, April has seen a net gain.

MWIS are forecasting that there will be a few days of melt coming up, but nothing too major. Interestingly, the medium term forecast after next weekend gives cause for optimism for May skiing: "There are strong indications of further lengthy cold conditions beyond."

Right on cue, a trip report from the Walkhighlands site: [www.walkhighlands.co.uk]

A couple of these photographs illustrate just how localised snow cover can be in Scotland. The first photograph (here) shows Ben Alder from the hills above Drumochter (Carn na Caim) with a good covering of snow, but nothing to write home about. Travel a few miles up the road to the Cairngorms, though, and the story is somewhat different. Remarkable difference for such a short distance.

Gary's blog showing still considerable depth in the upper reaches of Observatory Gully (i.e. where it matters). The stuff lower down suffered in March, but higher up the damage looks to be slight. Reasons for optimism where there were none in March!

Veletron's excellent picture from yesterday shows the depth of Garbh Choire Mor well. Quite a bit more than during 2011 and 2010 at roughly the same time.

Also, given the medium range forecast, I wonder how GCM will be looking in 13 days' time? 2008 was a pretty good year for survivals by recent standards.
