There is a picture of a Snow Tornado on Cairngorm Facebook, comment by
Kathryn Munro.

Is there a more correct name for this feature. Sorry don't know how to copy to here.

I think within the sphere of mountaineering they're referred to as 'snow devils'

The first picture, Donald, is of Ben More and Stob Binnien. The train in the picture looks to be on the Tyndrum (Lower) branch just north of Crianlarich. I can't see enough of the second picture to know conclusively.

A very considerable amount of snow on the hills for May, more reminiscent of March. A good one for the archive!

Yes you are right Iain. The second one is further south looking onto the northern flanks of Ben Vorlich from Glen Falloch.

On 1st May I probed a maximum depth skiers right of the Ptarmigan T-bar in the Ptarmigan Bowl of 280cm:

Today (Wednesday 9th May) after the Southerly to SE'ly drifting and snow fall on Tuesday:

That is a 320cm probe, I dug down about 20cm by hand and it still wasn't to ground, giving a depth > 340cm.

What a weather forecast today for the Western Highlands.
CONSTANT SNOW WHITEOUT - INCESSANT SNOW MANY HOURS OF WHITEOUT.

How much depth of snow is this going to put down on the Ben and Aonach's. Well needed brings a smile to my face when i see a forecast like that.

I suspect that this type of discussion is best left for the ramping thread... smiling smiley

Let's discuss it when the snow that's forecast to fall, falls. At the moment it's pure guesswork. I suspect that there won't be a huge gain in cover, as the temperatures between 700-914 metres are just too high at present.

I was up in Dumfries and Galloway today. When travelling east on the A75, looking to my left, so directly North, or Nerth West there was quite a large snow patch in the distance. i would estimate it was some 15 miles away, and it was Southernly facing. Here is where i saw the snow and the direction it was in. Maybe if someone is up that way they could have a look?

Interesting, Rick. The hill on the left of your picture is Corserine. I didn't think that there was any left there, but I may have been premature. Further digging required...

I will try and post up a couple of pictures of Hart Fell from last week that were sent to me. The snow that moffatross saw some weeks ago is still there, and in reasonable nick. Very interesting indeed!

As David Goldsmith his stated elsewhere, heavy snow on a westerly wind as deposited a fair amount of snow on the 'right' aspects over the last twelve hours or so on Meall a' Bhuiridh. Temperatures on both Aonach Mor and Cairn Gorm suggest that fresh snow has fallen here, too, and I woke up this morning in Boat of Garten to pouring rain (which was cold)!

I saw Dakishman on the hill on Saturday and we were discussing the incredible cover of snow on the Spey side of the Cairngorms. The drifts at the Ptarmigan were feet deep themselves!
