Snow shower on Meall a' Bhuiridh this morning.

I saw the radar this morning, Alan, and thought that there was snow falling at Nevis and the Cairngorms. Temperatures below freezing on Cairn Gorm so almost certainly light snow.

I make that 4 days so far this June when snow has fallen (3rd, 4th, 12th and 13th). Symptomatic of the cool air that's currently in charge. This Greenland high pressure is great for snow patch retention, but not great for the deluges that we are getting down south as a result of a shifting of the jet stream!

MWIS forecasts heavy snow on Cairngorms above 1100 m on Friday before turning to rain, and also southerly gales.
Stob Coire Easain snow survivals followed winters with exceptional snowfalls on the high hills, predominantly SW winds in 1967 but general westerly in 1951 with a trendency to be NW.

Took a wander up Cairngorm today to see how the patches are holding up. Some photos here [www.winterhighland.info]

As we approach the longest day of the year the weather is reminiscent of March than the summer solstice with a 50mph wind and sub zero temps on Cairngorm ALL day! The latest charts indicate that the weather looks like remaining cool for the foreseeable future. High pressure to the north west of the U.K. and a benign Atlantic jet stream into next week should ensure a continuation of the slow melt rate of recent days.Very dry conditions have prevailed at Nevis Range since mid May so minimal rain wash and a fair few cool nights to consolidate the remaining snow patches. This June has been similar to last with a chilly first half but much drier in the west. The early July survey will be interesting as this winter/spring
snowfall has been unusual to say the least and in stark contrast to the last 2 cold winters.

...and to underline coaster's point, Gary Hodgson's photograph from the summit of Ben Nevis today chalks up day 5 of June snow. More pictures here: [www.tarmachan.blogspot.co.uk]

I wonder where we'd be if we'd missed out on the May heatwave?

Coaster I'd agree other than I don't think I'd want to be in Coire na Ciste on the Ben just now in a T shirt as we were in March this year !

Three pictures from Jo Kincaid, taken on the 18th June. They are all from the hills above Glen Ogle. [www.streetmap.co.uk]

I should point out that they're all low resolution, cropped from larger photographs. The most interesting one of the three is Beinn Heasgarnich, with large patches still visible. I'm going up there a week on Friday and expect to be requiring my 100m tape measure!

Jonny616 from Walkhighlands forum was up on Beinn Bhrotain yesterday and posted a couple of interesting pictures, especially that last one that shows a big wreath on Monadh Mor at the usual place, here.

retep's snow patch on Beinn Ime still present on the 20th, as can be seen in Gary Canavan's photograph.

It's better shown, here, with a photograph from the 18th June. The designation of the photograph is wrong (it's not Beinn Bhuidhe through the gap, but rather Beinn an Lochain).
