Wh servers flakey?
Date Posted: 17.45hrs on Thu 26 Jul 12
Quite often I don't get to WH in the last couple of weeks. Trying 5 minutes later usually worked.
Anyone else have these issues?

Yup. Seems to flit between .com and .info on the address bar. Maybe it's the Cloud?

Tim (or anyone else having problems connecting), if you could give any more info it would be greatly appreciated. The IP address of the site changed with the server move, so there might be some DNS cache issues.
As far as I am aware there has only been a couple of brief overnight outages on the cloud server for specific upgrades to be installed and the virtual sever rebooted.
If anyone is occasionally getting a default server 'holding page', you are seeing the old Winterhighland server - this would be the result of a DNS caching issue (most likely on a given computer in this case).
Seeing the site OK at times, then getting sever not found errors would suggest a a network dns issue / conflict. Andrew is it the same work machine that the site is sometimes visible from, or is it OK on some systems and never works on others?
Flush DNS settings:
If you are having a connection problem on a windows machine try the following command from either a command prompt or run window:
ipconfig /flushdns
Ping the server:
If the problem is intermittent, when you are unable to see the site in a browser, then whether on a Windows, Mac or other Unix/Linux system bring up command prompt/shell and try:
ping winterhighland.info
If you get a response check the IP address is 83.223.111.121, if it's something else there is a DNS issue affecting your network. On OSX and other Unix systems, don't leave ping running or the Winterhighland server's firewall will automatically block you for a period of time!

I have copied and pasted your notes into a text file, so i can refer to them if site doesnt load again.
its the same laptop I have been having problems with when trying to connect from office. and a different machine when at home (but that has been OK)
laptop is dual-boot with linux, so i will try in linux next time i get the problem

A couple of minutes later and WH is not accessible again,
$ ping www.winterhighland.info
ping: cannot resolve www.winterhighland.info: Unknown host
Back up a minute later.

Whether the site is down or not is based simply on time afaik, I don't think it is a client side issue but server side.

It seems intermittent sounds more like a load balancer or someting in the extrernal gateway routing. I am accesing from Ireland via smart phone, laptops, differetn work locations and not experienceing any problems.
