From what I can tell forecasts seem to be saying it will be below freezing with light snow for much of next week in Scottish Highland areas. The overall UK forecast does predict milder weather, think the slopes should get away with it though. I can only hope this comes off as I have the week off next week!!!!! eye popping smiley)

The beeb are expecting a coldish weekend for aviemore. -1c is a daytime high on saturday and -8c alow for night time. But sunday is 2c high and to be -1c overnight. And weather underground is forecasting minus temps up the gorm on monday too.

Those BBC 5 day forecasts are dodgy!!!

Current models show saturday being cold and dry, as Alan said. the exact timing of the mild weather in uncertain. However, as the mildness is coming from the west it will reach the gorms and lecht after nevis and glencoe. It currently looks like starting to arrive midway through sunday.

On this assumption I am going to go climbing in the cairngorms, maybe Lochnagar this weekend.

views on what the weather is doing sunday seem to be varied. Milder weather looks set to come into the UK from the west either sunday or monday, but scotland may be a little different. Everyone is forecasting different things and it's hard to know for sure what's going on. Is anyone here proficient enough at reading charts to know any better? I'm hoping that most of sunday will stay coldish in the west cause I'm heading to Nevis on sunday and I HATE being rained on whilst riding!

The charts are all over the shot with each run, the GFS morning ensembles for Aberdeen show 12°c difference between the coldes and mildest run by Monday!!

Taking the extremes Monday could see a sea level freezing level or +10°c at 3000ft!!

Geoff monk does not have aclue either. Here is what he says -
"A change to milder weather will come in across much of Britain on Sunday with rain
extending southeast to many central and later more southern mountains (Wales). The
picture for Scotland is more complicated with rain turning to snow, and perhaps coming to
a halt. Confidence is low, but in some areas, there could be significant snowfall, before the
mild air eventually comes in."

But T.W.O are predicting for scotland to be around 6c and around freezing at night (this is for scotland as a whole and says the same thing for both the medium and long range forecasts). Anyone have a shot of a time machine to see what it is going to be like.

Notice the lack of mention on TV forecasts about any beyond the weekend clues, somethings up, hopefully it turns out for the better!!

I say make the most of this weekend. Look at any of the major models for early next week, and they all say the same thing.

Yes, there may well be a brief thaw but by the middle of tuesday the FL will be below the summits again according to current indications. Given the large amount of snow present in the west a short thaw will provide an extremely excellent and wide base. Of course, the thaw needs to be not too drastic, preferably 1 or 2 degrees at 3000 feet, we shall see anyway.

There lies the problem, we could see temps of 10*C at the summits!

Now for monday the beeb are predicting plus 12c and rain in aviemore day and night. But Geoff Monk is predicting some cooling and some snow for scotland later in the week. Just as long as it doesn't rain to much

I wouldn't rate the beeb forecast they nearly allways get it wrong for the mountains or scotland in general (unless heather of course!). The weather channel and the weather outlook seem to say the same ...a bit milder but not too mild - hope they get it right.....just have to wait and see but given some of the forecasting that the beeb and met office have done this week it might not be as bad as it looks.

Any thoughts on the weather for sunday? It looks like the wind is going to pick up. Will glencoe be sheltered enough form the west winds to keep the tows on?
