UK Ice Conditions Server Now Restored
Date Posted: 13.08hrs on Tue 3 Feb 04
Owing to the demand expressed both in regular threads in the forums, and numerous emails on the subject, the original UK Ice Conditions Server has been restored, and is now live and accepting reports, already three have been posted this morning, which is pretty quick off the mark!

The Ice Server is currently in an old site format. It has been updated so links point to current relevant information sources for weather, avalanche reports, and there is also links to Climbinfo. A new more sophisticated version is under development, however I note the comments in previous threads that people liked the simplicity of the old server. Feel free to add comments or suggestions about what you like/don't like about the old server, or what you would like to see in a new one below, we need the feedback to provide the service you want.

I wrongly believed the old server was too simple, too old and had it's day, however last night I trawled through UK Climbing's forums and found several threads about what had happened to it, so add that to the threads in Winterhighland's own forum and it seems I underestimated the demand that is still there for it.

The server only accepts text based reports, if you have any photos, please upload them to an appropriate thread, or create an appropriate thread in this forum, then when you post your report on the Ice Server mention that there are pics in the forum. Also please remember that the server files reports by day it received them, not the day the report was for so please remember to check each reports date. Plus of course don't forget how quickly conditions can change, but the reports coupled with taking into account current weather conditions should be useful.

Finally, the Ice Server is for climbing reports, not for debates about climbing ethics, requests for a partner etc., please use the forums for these. Occasional posts regarding lost gear will be accepted providing they don't start to swamp the reports. Unsuitable posts will be removed to keep the Ice Server on topic.

Lastly a question about this forum. This section was for climbing reports, should it be kept now as a climbing forum, or would it be better to put climbing discussion in the main snow and mountain sports forum?

Yay! The ice conditions server is back.
Thanks Alan I really appreciate having a source of on the ground information accessible. I also think the simplicity of it is part of the user friendliness of the system.
Now all we need is some cold weather...

Fantastic. If i had thought it would be reinstated i would have posted the thread last year. I agree with others the simplicity was one of its greatest assets, plus it was so well used. One of the great things about it was there just wasn't any of that oh so sad pointless chat that seems to clog other sites.

Once again great to have it back, i'll be posting soon. Cheers Tim
