Doug, consider this. Glencoe decides that they are going to reduce uplift capacity, they take the Main Basin T-bar out of service, decommission it and leave the towers standing, leaving only the Top Button for uplift on the upper mountain.

Of course the Button has a much less reliable track than the T-bar, so there are long periods of the winter with the upper runs in great shape, but the Button doesn't have enough snow on the track to run.

I find it difficult to imagine that you would not be on here insuring there was hell to pay (justifiably) in that scenario!

Alan, straight question - does Colin's quote change your view on CML Core Lift Policy?

With respect to the Core Lift policy...we are where we are...irrespective of what we all think about it.
The lack of uplift capacity from mid-mountain is brought sharply into focus at times like now....with the M1 Poma being out of action....and on Saturday when the Cas T-Bar was trashed.
Maybe Colin is just expressing his 'wish list'...like with the replacement/repair of the boardwalk or oil filed boxes for the Cas T-Bar ..

Well I think its safe to say CML as a company realise their big issue and would like to errect additional lifts. But theres no telling if Colin was just expressing the wishes of himself or the company or if it was an actual propisition. If they do plan to have a new lift for next season, just remember the problems Glenshee faced getting the Baddoch Chair to where it is now. A year late, possibly longer, because of the DoT, nearly 10 years late (Am I right in saying?) for other reasons.

Cairngorm getting additional lifts is essential if they are to move forward if we get winters like these for a while. Its unlikely to be replacement of an existing lift, as they spent allot of money putting the current lifts right. But maybe, just maybe, they are thinking about the Ciste Chairlifts. That plan has been floating around for a while now.

Is that not a slightly loaded question to base on what could have been a flippant one liner?

Surely the bottom line on this one, is that new lifts are not just going to appear next season with less than a years notice, however good this season is. First there is the issue of booking a slot with a lift manufacturer, such short notice would surely incur a huge premium. Then there would be planning issues, statutory consultations would be required, EIA produced, regulatory issues over the lift, let alone finance arrangements.

The West Wall Chairlift seems to remain the only short term game in town for increasing mid mountain uplift capacity and it can help the situation in Coire Cas, by spreading the load around the mountain and in good conditions a reduction in pressure on the WW Poma, means the DLP / WWP combo can be used to ski the Cas with little queuing.

I commend CML for the chips and beans I had yesterday - top quality. However they need to catch up with the other areas re bilingual signage.

Why would any Scottish centre purchase a brand new lift? Glenshee, Lecht + Nevis have all aquired second hand lifts from Europe for the only the cost of transport. Why spend hundreds of thousands on something new when there are hundreds of second hand lifts lying around maintenance yards in Europe?

The quote, of course, is an announcement of nothing. To buy a lift? Do they need money to transport a second hand lift? To reposition a lift? To get engineering consultancy work done in preparation of releasing a tender for a new lift? 'New lifts' in a Scottish sense could mean many things. And of course it's caveated with the implication they need another successful season.

If I don't see them wasting a huge amount of money by having dual signage in Gaelic, i'm going to write a strongly worded letter to the Strathy. And perhaps even the P&J.

Good luck with your letter. Let us know when it's published.

By doing so they would reduce their signage costs by 60% as they would get a grant. For info, I am not suggesting a mass replacement programme, just on a needs be basis.
