Is there no way of putting in an FOI request for the breakdown in ticket sales. They surely must take a record of how many of each type of ticket they sell. They run an electronic ticketing system which will include recording, so long as the request is not vexatious they must respond....... No?

from an article on the "Strathy" website:

"The company has said that they have no intention of rushing into any major investment in skiing because of the threat that climate change continues to pose to the industry.

However, they intend to reopen and extend the lower Coire na Ciste chairlift, which has been closed to the public for around nine years as part of the new plans, and would benefit skiers and snowboarders as well as mountain bikers.

The project would include refurbishing and extending the lower Ciste na Ciste chairlift; creating a novice mountain biking route and features park at the bottom of the lower ciste and a zip-wire ride, as well as building an energy-efficient new reception building on the existing Ciste site."

Very uninspiring......Why not talk up the snowsports business....we've had 2 great seasons which have enabled us to spend over £400,000 on maintenance of our uplift and we bought a new Kasssbohrer. We are gearing up for another great season to come. Season ticket are available until 30 September at discounted prices.............rather than persist with the global warming theme that doesn't send out a positive message.

The bit about the Ciste is old news that was put out over a year ago......with no other info since.

OlderAlan - the most uninspiring things I ever read on WH are your relentless whinges, whines and relentless analysis of apparently inept ski centre management.

Running a ski centre is easy from your arm chair - especially when you don't have to answer to HIE or Bank of Scotland winking smiley

Pretty sure everyone would like to see Coire Ciste run again if circumstances allow. Or do you honestly believe they are keeping it shut just to spite you ?

Regards

Optimistic Doug.

The quote is negative though, how do you put a positive spin on that? Climate change or mini ice age, nothing is certain.

All they are really saying is we are not going to undertake any development and we are using climate change as an excuse to shut all the moaning snowsport clients who should just be happy with what is on offer.

This is why I will mostly be skiing at Glenshee this year.

Seems positive to me ? Lets hope they can get the funding and permission in place from HIE & the bank to make it happen thumbs up.

Climate change or not, Scotland will continue to have good and bad winter seasons.
Summer has always been a problem - not many businesses can survive on just 5 months trade a year. So if each of the centres can get generate year round profits then it is clearly good news for snowsports too ?

Anyway - I am out....
Blowing hot air on WH isnt gonna help anyone grinning smiley

1/ The pronouncement is from the Board of CML, not necessarily the oiperators. As I understand it, CML is 100% owned by HIE. The board are appointed by HIE, and operate solely with the agreement of the owner. It is therefore a reasonable assumption that any public pronouncements from the Board represent also the views and policies of the owner for the operation. HIE is a public body, and therefore we all have a right to express our opinions about what they are doing.

2/ CML is unique among the Scottish areas because of that public ownership by a major and influential organisation. Many other linked and other public bodies and layers of government will consider that its ownership of the "jewel" of Scottish snowsports will somehow give it a unique expert insight into the future of the industry. That influence will also extend to major sources of finance and other critical functions. There is therefore also a unique responsibility for any pronouncements to be extremely considered, measured and based fully on real facts and expectations. Excess negativity will not only affect the public's perception of CML as a future destination for wintersports in Scotland (ie adversely affect demand not only at CML, but also at Glencoe, Shee, Lecht and Nevis), but also adversely affect potential sources of finance for capital investment at those centres, and colour the views of planners, transport providers, infrastructure providers, etc, serving those centres.

3/ IMHO, Olderalan has not just criticised, but also offerred an entirely logical and supportable alternative modus.

Doug, tell me how is ending a press release a fortnight before the early bird discount for season passes expires, with their standard line about global warming a positive contribution?

If everyone had listened to optimistic Doug over the past 5 years and kept their heads below the parapet and never spoke up, there were would be even fewer lifts still standing on CairnGorm Mountain. How is that optimistic for snowsports?

Have always said that relentless moaning about Cairngorm is really dumb for 2 reasons.

1) The ski area was effectivly bankrupted by massive funicular debt and a run of below average winters between 2002 and 2007.

2) Over the past decade the bank have obviously been pulling the strings and telling the managers what to do, and what money can be spent. HIE certainly dont want to own a ski area - however if they hadnt put money in then the place might be shut by now ?

For sure, bad things happened. But move on and give them a chance.
Because Cairngorm can still be a fun place to ski and everytime I visit the place runs like clockwork (even if we would all like the ciste chairs restored).

Any casual visitor to this forum would be put off by the relentless 'management are inept' campaign. Often I keep my mouth shut and let them whine away. But on this occasion I dared to be a beligerant sod and present a few facts - for the simple reason there are 2 sides to every story.

Clearly i lose for getting sucked into the one sided debate. At least if the annual 'CML sniping' season has started then it probably means snow is on the way grinning smiley

Regards

Younger Doug.

p.s Oh aye - the original article use the term 'climate change' not 'global warming'. Anyone who doesnt believe climate change might be reality has their head in the clouds. The rest of the article seems upbeat to me ?

Peeps can stick their head in the sand as there wont always be snow for that purpose. But Global Warming is happening here and now the metoffice reckon that half of the years in this decade will be warmer than the warmest on record for the uk. Peeps suckered in by the last couple of years are in for a real shock. Doesnt excuse the marketing departments verbal diarrhoea mind! You think they could change the story with the season pass deadline near!!
