No this is not a scam.
During some random browsing I came accross this website [
sites.google.com] where you can download free maps to put onto your garmin gps units. The maps come from [
www.openstreetmap.org] this is source of open source map where you can upload your own information to fill in the gaps. The contour data is from The Scottish Mountaineering Club
I happened to look at the Cairngorm area and have noticed that someone has added the names of the ski runs. I am going to have a go at uploading some info from my area as loads of blanks on the map around me. Considering how much it costs to buy Garmin or OS mapping these days I like the idea of this "Free" maps! I am not really a hitech computer buff so not sure how I will get on uploading info but will give it a try once I collect some data. I dare say it is a way to get some paths tracks etc onto a GPS unit that garmin might miss out. From what the person has put onto the talkytoasteruk site he updates the downloadable maps every few weeks so, by submitting info to the openstreetmap site you have a chance of having your own customised GPS maps in a month or so.
