Scottish Snow & Mountain Sports
Updated: 16.14hrs Monday 9th December 2019

Firstly, we are at the Glasgow Film Theatre with the 70th anniversary Warren Miller Ski Film TIMELESS on Tuesday (10th) - tickets will be available on the door from 8pm or see link below for online ticketing.

Another thermal roller coaster over the next 24 hours as a storm system sweeps through, sadly a bit too far North as it will after an initial period of mountain snow in the early hours of Tuesday lift the freezing level well above the tops for around 12hours with heavy rain and Severe Gale or even Storm Force Winds in the Munros. Mid afternoon or there about in the West the freezing level will drop quite abruptly as a cold front comes through and by dusk snow is expected to be falling to or slightly below the top of the West Coast access lifts.

We have had some very limited lift served riding on CairnGorm where 2 towers worth of the Carpark T-bar available serving a lower beginner area and small terrain park on snow factory snow by the Daylodge on CairnGorm. This will definitely be closed on Tuesday due to the forecast windspeeds of 70mph at the Daylodge, even higher gusts are likely to rip down Coire Cas given the SW direction. There should be fresh snow on the limited machine made base for Wednesday and temperatures should be getting into the region that would allow the fan guns to come on-stream as well.

Meteorological Winter begun as often is the case (as the 30 year trend line on Wetterzentrale GFS ensemble charts show) with a marked rise in temperature compared to the preceding period! So far this is pretty typical weather fare for the time of year and we have become slightly accustomed to early starts haven been a bit more common in recent times, but on average meaningful and sustained lift served snowsports pre Christmas is not that common and at Glencoe getting started before New Year has historically been fairly rare.

Stay tuned, with a cooler week forecast and snow factories continuing in operation at The Lecht, Glencoe, Glenshee and CairnGorm, more significant lift served snowsports is hopefully not too far away.
