CairnGorm Mountain closed on 30th April, as funicular construction work brought the 2001 season to an early end. While Nevis provided a fitting close to the season with three great days over the May Day Holiday weekend, it was the 'Gorm that had the best of the spring snow. May 2001 was a scorcher in the Central Highlands, dominated by large areas of high pressure over Northern Scotland. Thus with the blazing sun and temperatures in Strathspey regularly in the 80's°f and the snow fields of CairnGorm Mountain glistening in the sunshine, all there was to do was dream about what might have been. An entire month of shorts and t-shirt skiing on deep spring snow, bashing the bumps of the Ciste Gully, carving up the white Lady, or straight lining Coire Cas for a cooling breeze.... Well maybe next year, or the one after, or the one after the one after...
